Once I got started writing, I kept on writing. I wrote poems and I wrote short stories. Sometimes I wrote to impress Lisa Agostino and my teachers. But mostly I wrote because I liked to imagine all kinds of interesting adventures. You see, I have a good imagination. I’m curious about everything and I like to make up stories about the things I see and hear. I also like to write stories about things I think probably happened—even if I don’t exactly know for sure what happened!
In second grade, though, one of my teachers didn’t think I should use my imagination so much. She probably thought I should pay more attention to making my handwriting better or learning my subtraction facts, but instead I wanted to write stories. She told me that I should stick to writing about the things I know—not the things I imagine.
